Of course, no one ever really dies in the Marvel world (except Uncle Ben), but the Guardians of the Galaxy as we know them are about to come to an end. Writer and director James Gunn is already teasing that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, due out next year, will wrap things up for this particularly unlikely group of spacefaring misfits. In a new interview with Weekly entertainmentZoe tells Saldaña that she is playing Gamora in a fifth and presumably final film.

“It was bittersweet because we were told this is the last episode of Guardians of the Galaxy, I know Gamora has been on a different journey,” said the actor. “So whether they go on, I don’t know what it has in store for Gamora in terms of, will she become a Guardian again or not? So it was bittersweet.”

While Gamora was murdered by her adoptive father Thanos in Avengers: Infinity Waran earlier version of her was brought into the present tense in Avengers: Endgame. However, she soon parted ways with the Guardians as she missed those years of friendship and character development and didn’t appear alongside the team in Thor: love and thunder. The new trailer for The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special reveals that the old/new Gamora’s reunion with Peter Quill and his company is still underway.

“It started bitterly at the beginning, because of course you anticipate the end, but we ended so sweetly, and I’m just so happy that I got to work with great people again,” Saldaña continues. “I had an evolution that I saw in myself, but also in my director and my cast. I just felt very blessed and grateful. It was a very sweet departure, I must say.”

elsewhere in the EW video describes Saldaña feeling “lost in the trenches” on the set of her first major blockbuster, Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, adding, “I just didn’t feel like that was okay.” She later received an apology from producer Jerry Bruckheimer for her bad experience. Of course, the actor persevered and has become one of today’s top stars, appearing in threes Star Trek movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that little movie called Avatar.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
