Rebel Moon focuses on a peaceful colony that has settled on the edge of space, whose world is turned upside down and under attack by the armies of the dictator Belisarius. For their own survival, the settlers send Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, as an emissary to seek help from neighboring planets. In addition to Boutella, the film features a large cast consisting of actors Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher (Justice League), Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi and Sky Yang. Also join the cast are Obi-Wan Kenobi star Rubert Friend and Army of Thieves actor Stuart Martin, although the nature of their roles has not yet been revealed.
Rebel Moon was originally intended to be Snyder’s own pitch for a potential Star Wars movie, intended as a darker take on George Lucas’s sci-fi universe. Nearly a decade later, after striking a deal with Netflix, the film was redesigned and now Snyder hopes to do the same. Rebel Moon in an extended franchise similar to his Army of the Dead series.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder said in July 2021. “It’s my love for sci-fi and a giant adventure. I hope this also becomes a huge IP and a universe that can be built. I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner should be painted. I’ve been designing, drawing constantly and really cultivating its fertile soil to fully realize this world.” Rebel Moon is expected to last until November 2022 and will be split into two feature films.
Directed by Snyder, with a screenplay by Snyder, 300 co-screenwriter Kurt Johnstad and Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten, Rebel Moon has no release date yet and will stream on Netflix.
