catch ‘woven whisper’ during Milan Design Week 2022
In the case that Milan Design Week 2022, designer Richard Yasmine introduces ‘WOVEN Whispers’ at 5vie. Set in a natural garden on Via Cesare Correnti, the collection features furniture pieces inspired by nomadic lifestyles, bold modernism, elemental geometries and the arts & crafts movement. More importantly, the project celebrates ancient handicraft techniques dating back 5,000 years – originating in ancient Egypt before making their way to Persia and the Roman Empire.
†It is a proclamation to preserve our disappearing cultural heritage as we explore the relationship between the East and the West. A message physically transformed into a dramatically enchanted collection of furniture that maintains a connection to the past, keeping in mind the evolution of our modern timesYasmine notes.

‘the city and the tower’: an ode to social systems
In addition to honoring ancient crafts, Yasmine (see more here) also references historic settlements by composing sculptural pieces with stackable tables of various sizes and heights – which he calls “The City and the Tower.” The resulting designs reflect the monolithic pillars and buildings that towered over cities like Babylon.
Meanwhile, his choice of colours, patterns and material composition reflects the social, geopolitical and psychological layers of social systems worldwide. With ‘WOVEN Whispers’, the designer specifically wanted to convey a message of togetherness and harmony. For example, the ropes that adorn the building-like furniture represent help and hope, showing the importance of social structures and the value of the individual; both levels are essential to keep a system stable.
reviving almost extinct craftsmanship
Yasmine collaborated with several artisans to complete his collection, promoting their faithful techniques and graceful skills of weaving and braiding. Materials include natural fibers, organically dyed ropes, rattan, cane and wood to accentuate a warm, earthy and somewhat primitive aesthetic.
Traveling through time, cultures and civilizations, the project eventually spotlights various skills that are on the brink of extinction and relives artisans’ unique journey through history.
