Updated: Road reopens after major police incident in central York

A major police incident in central York is now over.

Police closed a large area around Clifford’s Tower and Castle Car Park tonight (Tuesday).

Tower Street was cut off. Businesses there, including restaurants and the Castle Snooker Club, were evacuated.

But now that the operation is over, the cordon has been lifted and businesses have reopened.

Earlier, motorists were diverted by the police. People were not allowed in or out of Castle Car Park.

There was a large police presence, including several vans and officers stationed around the perimeter of the cordon.

A person who was asked by police to leave their Tower Street business said he had heard of a report of a suspicious package. But that has not been confirmed.

Police at the scene did not comment. More if we get it.
