Ukraine Official on Peace Talks with Russia

Mykhailo Podolyak has called Russia a “barbaric country” threatening world security.

Kyiv:

Ukrainian presidential adviser and peace negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak said on Saturday that any agreement with Russia cannot be trusted and that only force can stop Moscow from its invasion.

“Any agreement with Russia is not worth a broken penny,” Podolyak wrote on the Telegram messaging app. “Is it possible to negotiate with a country that always lies cynically and propagandistically?”

Russia and Ukraine blamed each other after peace talks stalled, with the last known personal negotiations taking place on March 29. The Kremlin said earlier this month that Ukraine was unwilling to continue peace talks, while officials in Kiev blamed Russia for the lack of progress.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said President Vladimir Putin was the only Russian official he was willing to meet to discuss how to end the war.

President Putin says Russian troops are conducting a special operation to demilitarize Ukraine and rid of radical anti-Russian nationalists. Ukraine and its allies call that a false pretext to invade Ukraine on February 24.

“Russia has proven that it is a barbaric country that threatens the security of the world,” Podolyak said. “A barbarian can only be stopped by force.”
