On Friday, the Ukrainian army announced the recapture of a city in the eastern region of Donetsk and other locations, coinciding with the organization of referendums in the Ukrainian regions under control of Russia.
“The Ukrainian army has taken back Yatskivka,” Oleksiy Gromov, an official with the Ukrainian Military Staff, told television.
The capture of this city, on the eastern shore of Lake Oskil, confirms the continuation of the counter-offensive that had previously enabled Kiev to regain control of thousands of square kilometers in the neighboring region of Kharkiv.
Gromov said that “Ukrainians have also regained control of positions south of Bakhmut,” the main city in the Donetsk region, which has been the target of attacks for weeks.
This coincides with the referendums taking place on Friday in Ukraine on accession to Russia.
