MILWAUKEE — Nearly two dozen people were injured late Friday night in two shootings in the bar district of downtown Milwaukee after the Milwaukee Bucks playoff game that drew thousands to the Deer District.
Seventeen people were injured in a shooting shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, just two hours later and blocks from an earlier shooting that left three people injured, including a 16-year-old girl.
In the earlier shooting, police arrested a 19-year-old man and said two other men, aged 29 and 26, had been injured. It is not clear whether the two shootings are related.
All victims, ranging in age from 15 to 47, are expected to survive, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
Ten people are in custody, nine weapons were recovered, according to a brief press release from the Milwaukee Police Department sent early Saturday.
Authorities have not released further information about the victims, the suspects’ ages or what they believe led to the shooting.
The gunshots sent hundreds of fans racing through the Deer District, where 11,000 people had gathered to watch Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series between the Bucks and Boston Celtics.
Bill Reinemann, a parking attendant on a lot adjacent to Deer District, told the Associated Press he stayed at his post as dozens of anxious Bucks fans raced past him
“It sounded like six to eight gunshots,” he said. “It was close.”
There was no direct indication whether the two shootings were related to or involved fans watching the match. Bucks spokesman Barry Baum put questions to the Milwaukee Police Department.
Witnesses told WTMJ-TV they saw a fight outside a bar after the basketball game.
