The Calgary Police Department responded to the northwestern community of Capitol Hill on the 1500 block of 21st Avenue NW at approximately 2:00 p.m. and found an elderly woman with serious injuries from a dog attack. Investigators believe the woman was working in the yard in an alleyway when the neighbor’s dogs escaped their yard and attacked her.

Police believe the dogs belong to a neighbor and not the victim or the victim’s family.

EMS said the woman was transported to Foothills Medical Center in life-threatening condition. Calgary police said Sunday evening that the woman later died in hospital.

A general investigation unit is investigating the attack while the chief investigators and the CPS Homicide Division consult with them, the Calgary Police Department said. Officers also work with municipal services because animals are involved.

The investigation is underway.

Police said the next steps for an incident like this depend on what comes to light in the investigation, but could lead to charges such as negligence leading to death or a violation of the law. The dogs may also be seized or euthanized.
