They built this city on rock’n’roll: architecture on album covers – in photos | Art and design

The latest exhibition at the Modernist Gallery in Manchester started with a joke from a father. Designer and producer Andy Votel was DJing when someone asked for house music, to which he replied, “We’ve got some records with houses in the front.”

Eddy Rhead of the modernist asked him to put together a selection of album covers featuring architecture from his extensive vinyl collection. “I get as much out of a record cover as I do out of music,” says Votel. “I didn’t do this exhibition to show very rare records with inappropriate price tags – this can occur in all of our collections.”
