We saw you on TV in 2021 in Ted Lasso, for which you won an Emmy – congratulations!
Thanks – it’s not something I ever thought I would achieve. No one expected the show to penetrate people’s hearts as much as it does now, but it was magical. I never hide from the fact that I’m in my mid forties and six feet tall, and parts where you can be vulnerable and stupid and heartbreaking are rare… I don’t know if a role like this will ever come again past me.

What would you do if you didn’t do your job?
I would probably become an interpreter. I’ve been plagued by wonderful Italians all my life and I speak the language because of my other half.

Have you ever been mistaken for someone else?
I’ve had Emma Thompson in the past, but I think that’s probably our personality type more than anything. We’re both a bit stupid.

What makes you happy?
My little girl. I waited a long time for her. I was doing theater work and I felt like I was going to miss the boat. By the time I got there, my fertility was questionable. I’ve always wanted a little girl, and she’s everything I dreamed of. I mean, sometimes a naughty wiener, but she’s seven.

The TV show you can’t wait to come back to?
Succession. I sometimes struggle to watch TV as an actor because you technically look at it and see what’s right and what’s wrong. But with that show I can just enjoy them because they are all so brilliant.

What do you eat in front of the TV?
I’m a huge crisp-aholic – old-school, supermarket own-brand products that will take the roof off your mouth. I really have to limit myself.

Who is the most famous person in your phone contacts?
Sharon Stone. She’s an epic human being – like the most ridiculously beautiful, sexy older sister you could ever want. What’s nice about all “famous people” as I call them is that I feel like if you’re a down-to-earth person, those who are attracted to you are too.
