The UAE celebrates “International Women’s Day in Diplomacy” at the United Nations for the first time

The United Arab Emirates first celebrated the International Day of Women in Diplomacy at the United Nations as the country is considered one of the main sponsors of the previously adopted United Nations General Assembly resolution, which stipulates that June 24 will be the International Day of Women in Diplomacy.

The Assistant Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs, the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said:Lana Zaki Nusseibeh“Women lead proficiently and make a significant contribution to directing diplomatic efforts around the world.”

She spoke of how proud the UAE is to be one of the key countries in supporting this historic decision, which brings recognition of the important role women play in diplomacy and international affairs. Whether in our country or around the world, we will continue to promote women’s interests in foreign policy, train female diplomats and promote women in key diplomatic positions

She added: “Today, women make up about 43% of the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation workforce, while we have achieved gender equality in the UAE’s permanent mission to the United Nations in terms of the forming the diplomatic framework as we strive to find common ground in our collective efforts to maintain global peace and security.

She said: “Despite the foregoing, there is still more work to be done around the world. The UAE delegation will continue to support women in the diplomatic field and throughout the United Nations system, because we cannot achieve peace until peace has been reached.” Giving every member of our global community the opportunity to participate and interact in a meaningful way.”

The United Nations General Assembly resolution on this International Day calls on Member States, United Nations agencies, NGOs and others to commemorate the occasion every year through information and awareness-raising activities.

Women are one of the main pillars of political and diplomatic life in the UAE, which continues to place “empowerment of women and girls” at the heart of national and foreign policies.

In 2014, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, took part in the launch of the “He For Her” solidarity campaign organized by UN Women to become the first Arab Foreign Minister to campaign, which aims to engage men and boys.
