l rather miss the hazy days of the 1970s and 1980s when art schools were mostly about sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll—perhaps with a bit of ironic shark stain on the side. It’s hard to imagine a hint of debauchery or decadence coming from the new £135 million campus of the Royal College of Art in Battersea, south-west London, which will officially open on Monday.

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the pristine workshops, studios, and double-height “hangar” seem more attuned to Silicon Valley techs than to shoddy artists.
