A 17-year-old saw his dreams of becoming a footballer shattered after he was paralyzed by a freak accident.

Corey Prendergast, from Cashel, Ireland, was playing with friends when he suffered a serious spinal cord injury last month.

He is currently undergoing treatment at Mater Hospital Dublin where friends, family and the wider community gather in the form of a fundraising page.

The shocking accident has had a huge impact on the local community and on Corey’s parents, Amanda and Ian, who travel from Tipperary to Dublin every day to be at his bedside.

Former Irish internationals John Aldridge and John O’Shea have sent him messages of support.

Corey’s club Cashel Town FC has gathered around the young athlete to support his parents and has organized a fundraiser to aid his recovery, Kick it for Corey.

The campaign was supported by former Liverpool and Ireland international Aldridge, who sent Corey best wishes in a video message and said he hopes to see him at Anfield in the future.

He said: “Hiya Corey, it’s John Aldridge here mate, ex-Liverpool and Republic of Ireland striker. I believe you support both teams as I do. I hope you’re okay.

“I think you’ve had a bad accident and you’re not very well at the moment, so I want to wish you all the best with your recovery and hope to see you at Anfield in the future.

‘Watch out, mate. You will never walk alone. The very best.’

Former Manchester United and Ireland international O’Shea also shared details of the Kick it for Corey fundraiser in his Instagram stories.

The GoFundMe message reads: “Corey Prendergast is a young man from Cashel, Co Tipperary who started school on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, a happy 4th year TY student. What happened to Corey that day was his life, and his families, forever changed.

“While playing with friends, a freak accident happened. Corey suffered a serious spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed. It’s a tragedy that our community is still trying to come to terms with.

“Anyone who knows Corey will tell you about his exceptional talent as a footballer. After playing in every age group through the Cashel Town Schoolboys Club, he graduated to join the Cashel Town youth team with the honor of taking over the departing Schoolboys -to be player of the year for the 2021 season.

“After playing with the youth all season, he was also recognized at the age of 16 and played in the Junior team for adults, rewarding his ability and talent.

“As you can imagine, his parents Ian and Amanda, and his siblings, will also have to make huge adjustments in their lives as Corey begins his road to recovery.

“To provide some financial support to Corey and his family, his Cashel Town Soccer family is asking you to donate to this GoFundMe page. Like and share this link. Thank you all for your kind donations.”

The fundraiser reached over €22,000 (£18,700) in just five days after people were moved by Corey’s story. If you’d like to donate to the Kick it for Corey GoFundMe, check it out here.
