Street Fighter 5 director shares a retro-style how-to guide with Street Fighter Alpha characters performing moves

The classic Street Fighter 2 artwork at this point is iconic, easily recognizable and memorable to those who grew up with the franchise. While there were all sorts of amazing artwork from the series, it was the illustrations in the manual depicting the world warriors performing their moves that were one of the best the games had to offer due to their simplicity and nostalgia factor.

Director of Street Fighter 5 Takayuki Nakayama often shares official illustrations and concept sketches of the Street Fighter franchise on Twitter, and in recent weeks he’s been posting some really great pieces featuring characters from the Street Fighter Alpha series performing some of their special moves. However, the beauty of these illustrations is that they are made in that classic SF2 manual style.

While every tweet that features one of these artworks will have a comment written by the Capcom developer, unfortunately these comments don’t usually relate to the artwork itself. Typically, Nakayama shares a new image and a tweet telling how his day is going or what he’s up to.

In the earliest tweet we found featuring this art, Nakayama mentions that he’s a fan of the instruction manuals, and these seem to be from the first Street Fighter Alpha booklet. He also notes that these were done for “illustrative purposes only”, and were not the same references used to build the in-game sprites.

There are quite a few images to look at, and here we have Ryu, Charlie, Rose, Sodom, Birdie, and Adon. These pieces are incredible, and that old Street Fighter 2 style was perfectly recaptured here with the Alpha series fighters.

We’d love to see more Street Fighter games – like Street Fighter 5 – get the same treatment here. It could be a real treat to see some of the latest contenders in the classic SF2 instruction manual.

There’s more artwork on Nakayama’s Twitter, so be sure to check it all out.
