Ski slope chairlift descends 13 feet with rider on board

A chairlift in Colorado plunged 14 feet to the ground in high winds with a skier on board, resort officials said.

The skier was unharmed in the incident that occurred Thursday at the state’s Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Resort officials say the chair fell off the Breckenridge Peak 8 SuperConnect, and a video posted to social media shows it on the ground rising to the top of the lift.

“Breckenridge Ski Resort confirmed at approximately 10:35 a.m. that a chair became detached from the rope of the Peak 8 SuperConnect as it reached the upper terminal,” the resort said in a statement.

“A guest was sitting on the chair at the time and fell about 4 meters. The ski patrol responded immediately. There were no injuries and the guest declined further care.

“We place the highest value on the safety of our guests and the Peak 8 SuperConnect will remain closed for the rest of the day.

“We are still actively gathering information and the elevator will undergo a full inspection before reopening to the public.”

Although the incident took place with strong winds, it is not yet known whether the weather played a role in the incident.
