Simultaneous central raids against PFI, Waqf Board, Madrasa raise questions

By Sushil Kutty

Thursday morning’s nationwide crackdown against the Popular Front of India (PFI) begs the question: “Why now, why today, why this morning?” Surely it can’t be the case that the PFI was caught doing ‘terror financing’ and ‘terror activities’ the night before? Terrorists and their associates take the time to set up terror factories, so what was the problem here, why now?

Both the Enforcement Directorate and the National Criminal Investigation Department were involved in the raids and arrests. At 11 a.m. Thursday, more than 100 PFI activists, half of them top leaders, were in the NIA-ED net. Not only PFI, but also SDPI ‘suspects of terrorist financing’. Much to the ire of right-wing hardliners, the Modi government had long given a long rope to the PFI, which viewed the Modi government as a “fascist regime.” The BJP has never attempted to correct the impression and nomenclature.

However, the PFI assumed that it gave “India” in the “People’s Front of India” the legitimacy to dream big, and the absolute right to make India an Islamic country separate from Pakistan. A PFI document translated “popular” to only “10% of Indian Muslims”. With so many Indian Muslims supporting the PFI, the ‘Hindu fascists’ would be out of the country!

Again, not surprisingly, in the PFI handbook, the “PF Indian” is more “Bharatiya” than a raunchy, everyday non-Muslim Indian. The PFI’s bragging rights to “take over India” was matched only by the odiousness of the PFI claim. The condescending attitude of the PFI cuts through like a dark shadow cutting into a sliver of bright light!

Thursday’s raids by the combined NIA-ED state police teams were in multiple locations and in multiple states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Assam. More than 100 PFI “activists” were arrested Thursday afternoon and transported to Delhi in the “largest ever investigation” by the Kerala-born PFI.

Buzzwords heard all morning were “terror financing,” “training camps,” and “radicalization.” The searches were carried out at both residential and office locations. The media kept talking about “the banned organization”, not once mentioning that the PFI was not a banned or banned organization. Chances are the next step will be to ban it.

So, are the Modi government and the BJP back to play “Hindu Muslim” which is a feature for any election? Gujarat assembly polls are next in line, with the BJP facing a Modi-esque avatar in AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal. Nor were the raids strictly unexpected. Similar raids were conducted on PFI targets in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on September 18.

But how can the entire top PFI leadership be a bunch of “terrorists” and “terror financiers” when the rest of the outfit is pure snow, with no blemish or accusation to their name? Everyone knows that the PFI is a blatant community, but everyone also knows that for centuries the Modi government had refused to take action against the PFI’s vociferous activities, including terrorizing crouched non-Muslims in the streets.

So, why the sudden enthusiasm? The action against PFI is accompanied by attempts to dismantle the Waqf infrastructure, as well as an attempt to discipline the madrasas. Both actions met with resistance, but nothing could be done to stop them, as both actions are out of line and within the bounds of the law of the land.

Not surprisingly, Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM, while asking the Yogi government to back down on the issue of the “Waqf Inquiry”, has requested that the “courts dealing with Waqf Board infarcts” give the Muslims must be transferred! However, the Center is keen that if any entity corrects the Waqf mess to help the “poor deceived Muslims”, it would be Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP government, and no one else.

Eight years of Modi government and the Modi government wants to form a “Muslim policy”; Not clear yet, but we are working on it. While hitting on the radicalized people like the PFI is part of it, other facets cover a large part of the Indian Muslim life and lifestyle. In its own intricate way, the RSS/BJP combination wants to bring the Indian Muslim under the umbrella of “sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka prayas”.

The actions against the PFI, the Waqf and the radicalized Madrasas come at a time when waves of ‘Hindu phobia’ are plaguing the safety and security of Hindus living in the UK, blaming the Hindutva ideology of the active BJP. since May 2014, an ideology that has kept Modi in power for two terms and is likely to keep him in power longer than thought. The government’s crackdown on the PFI will have a debilitating effect on the global fight against Hindutva. (IPA service)
