Shania Twain flattened her breasts as a teenager to prevent sexual abuse from her stepfather.

The singer, 57, warned “you didn’t want to be a girl in my house” when she talked about her troubled childhood, growing up poor in Ontario with four siblings living with her mother Sharon and stepfather Jerry Twain, who legally adopted the children.

Shania told the Sunday Times (04.12.22) about her tactics to dodge his abuse: “I hid myself and I would flatten my breasts.

“I wore bras that were too small for me, and I wore two of them, downplayed it until there was nothing girl about me anymore. Make it easier to go unnoticed.

“Because, oh my god, it was awful – you didn’t want to be a girl in my house.”

Shania added about her ensuing struggles when she left home, “But then you go into society and you’re a girl and you also get the normal other unpleasant things, and that amplifies it.”

“So then you’re like, ‘Oh, I think it’s just stupid to be a girl. Oh, it’s so stupid to have boobs.’ I was ashamed that I was a girl.”

Shania has said she was abused at home when she was about 10, telling The Guardian in 2018: “I feel like sexual abuse goes hand in hand with physical and psychological abuse if it’s someone you know. I’ve learned to block it.

“Abusers have to manipulate you, whether before or after, and what I said to myself was, ‘Okay, there’s something wrong with this person and that person isn’t right.’

Shania did not know her biological father and her stepfather Jerry and mother Sharon were killed in a car accident in 1987.
