Ricky Stuart confirms talks are underway to keep the versatile star

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has confirmed talks are underway to secure versatile striker Adam Elliott a new contract with the club.

Elliott left the Canterbury Bulldogs in controversial circumstances at the end of 2021. He was handed a lifeline with Raiders and grabbed it with both hands.

It is a difficult start to the season for Canberra† They have only won three of their first nine games, but Elliott has still managed to stand out. The back rower has shown his versatility playing the last two games at hooker.

Canberra Raiders want Elliott . like to keep

Elliott signed a one-year deal when he arrived for the new season. However, Stuart says talks are now underway to expand that. The Raiders boss has not disclosed the length of the deal, but says Elliott is part of his future plans.

“Adam knows where I stand with him in the long run,” Stuart told reporters. “Yes, I want to stay here, and talk to [NRL Recruitment and Pathways Manager] Kelly Egan and [Elliott’s manager] David Riolo is all very healthy at the moment so I am confident that will be the case.

“It’s just a matter of attaching a few bits and pieces to their communication about the deal.”

Stuart admits Elliott’s versatility has been crucial, but sees him cementing his place in the basic pack.

Versatile Elliott a great asset

“He’s not just filling in, he’s doing well there,” Stuart added. “It’s hard for a backrower to go into nine, but it shows its usefulness because he can hold out there for some time. He is doing a really good job for us in these difficult times.

“Adam Elliot is definitely pushing for a spot in the starter pack, whether it’s at nine, thirteen or on the brink, and that’s what I want.

“I want people to fight for places. At the moment we don’t have enough of that in certain positions and as a coach I have always said that I love to have people fight and compete for positions.”

The Raiders continue their campaign with a tough showdown against the Sharks in the Magic Round. Cronulla has started the season strong with six wins and is currently fourth on the ladder.

Elliott sits out against the Raiders due to a non-Covid-related illness. Tom Starling will start out as a whore.
