Putin the pig is no more, he is now Eberhofer

Mehlmeisel, Germany: An animal park in Bavaria that had named its wild boar Putin because of its Russian genetic heritage has held a ceremony to rename the hairy pig a German name after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Eckard Mickish, manager of the park just outside the town of Mehlmeisel, said he named the boar three years ago after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arrival, since it was bred from pure-bred boar from Russia.

At nearly 200 kilograms, the pig weighed about three times as much as the pigs normally found in Germany, he said.

But lately when Mickish had to call for visitors, a shiver ran down his spine when he mentioned Putin, given the war that was just unfolding in the west. He was also concerned about how Ukrainian visitors would feel.

He quickly came to the conclusion that no pig deserved this name and so the park announced a search for a new name on social media. About 2,700 suggestions poured in, and Eberhofer — the name of a police officer from a popular Bavarian book series — won the vote.

The boar was renamed in a ceremony Tuesday featuring a marzipan cake and biscuits decorated with five pink smiling pigs.
