prince charles came in for his mother the Queen to attend the state opening of parliament on Tuesday and deliver her speech outlining the government’s legislative program for the upcoming parliamentary session. It was a symbolic and historic moment for the future king, who is the longest-serving heir to the throne.
The Queen, 96, reluctantly taken out of her appearance late Monday night, as she continues to experience “episodic mobility problems” and after taking advice from her doctors, Buckingham Palace said. It is the first time in nearly 60 years that she has missed the ceremonial occasion.

During the monarch’s absence, Charles assumed the most important constitutional task of the head of state, a move seen as a major shift in his responsibilities as court king. He was also accompanied by his son Prince William who also represented the Queen at the event.
