In specific communities, social unrest is devastating. Even before the devastating floods, rents in the Northern Rivers region of NSW had risen 25 percent. On the south coast, still recovering from the wildfires, rents rose by 16 percent. In the Mornington Peninsula region of Victoria, rents are up 12 percent in the past year, while on the Gold Coast in Queensland they are up 28 percent. People in these communities spend hundreds of dollars extra every week, reducing their income after housing.
