Our experts on the score and style you can expect

After beating Wales 3-0 to finish with the best group stage record, England will play their first knockout match of the World Cup today.

They take on Africa Cup of Nations champions Senegal in the last 16 tonight at 7pm GMT.

Senegal were predicted to be one of the strongest non-European or South American teams in the tournament, with several high-profile players, but they have been weakened by an injury to star player Sadio Mané, which saw him miss the tournament.

Senegal has performed relatively well so far. They were unlucky in their first game against the Netherlands, losing to two late goals. They survived a scare in their 3-1 win over hosts Qatar before showing resilience in their 2-1 win over Ecuador.

England’s World Cup started in convincing fashion, with their 6-2 victory over Iran drawing much praise. A goalless draw followed against USA, which curbed the English enthusiasm somewhat. But they were back in winning ways with a convincing victory over Wales in the final game.

England will meet France or Poland in the quarterfinals if they beat Senegal

England 2 Senegal 0

England will win. I don’t think it will be comfortable or easy but I think Harry Kane will score and England will score their second goal late in the game to kill the tie.

The African champions may be without Sadio Mane, but they are well organized and dangerous and will want to keep it tight. It remains to be seen if England can tear them down and that may take patience – which they have shown before in knockout matches under Gareth Southgate.

England 2 Senegal 1

It’s going to be a little nervous and probably frustrating at times, but England have gotten used to winning knockouts at major tournaments and that’s a nice warm comforting blanket.

England 1 – 0 Senegal

An evening of frustration and introspection awaits England, who I can see score from a set piece or a penalty but then struggle to build on it. It is unlikely to be beautiful.
