Officer killed by man who barricaded himself in home

A Kentucky police officer was shot dead and several injured by a suspect who barricaded himself inside a home and then opened fire, police said.

Deputies with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office attempted to issue an emergency warrant when the violence first unfolded Thursday night, according to Lex 18. Two officers were hit in the first exchange of fire.

From there, it quickly escalated into an active shooter and hostage situation, prompting an additional response from several law enforcement agencies, including the Kentucky State Police and SWAT teams.

Both the suspect’s wife and daughter were in the home when officers arrived.

The situation dragged on for hours, but authorities finally managed to arrest the man around 11 p.m. He was identified as Lance Storz, 49, and is charged with murder, murder of a police officer, and assault on a service animal.

Hunt confirmed that one officer was fatally shot during the violence and more were rushed to area hospitals. He estimated that between four and six officers were injured, but he did not provide details about their condition.

None of the hostages were injured during the hours-long standoff.

“Tonight I ask the commonwealth to join Britainy and I in keeping Floyd County in prayer,” tweeted Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, “especially the families and loved ones of those who have responded to a barricade situation with a shooting .”
