Newsom targets GOP in Florida ad

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Governor Gavin Newsom is running for reelection in California, but his latest television commercial is airing in Florida.

The 30-second spot, which airs Monday on Fox News, takes photos of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his policies while contrasting California.

“Freedom is under attack in your state. Republican leaders are banning books, making voting more difficult, restricting speech in classrooms, and even criminalizing women and doctors,” Newsom said as images of DeSantis and former President Donald Trump flash on the screen.

“I urge anyone living in Florida to join the fight. Or come with us to California, where we still believe in freedom — freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate, and the freedom to love,” says Newsom.

Newsom has said he has no interest in running for president, but the ad is sure to spark speculation that the 54-year-old Democrat is eyeing a national office. DeSantis is a potential 2024 GOP candidate for the White House.

Newsom defeated a recall attempt last year and is expected to run for re-election in November.
