“Even if you don’t factor in the many ‘don’t age well’ moments, the pace is horrendous.”
Have you ever gotten around to watching a movie that everyone around you loves and can’t stop talking about, only to find out it just isn’t as good as people made it out to be?
Yes, me too. And so have many other people. That’s probably why there were so many responses to this Reddit user asking r/AskReddit movie buffs, “Which movie gets more credit than it should?” Here are 27 of the more controversial responses.
Comments have been edited for length and clarity.
†Frozen† Without one or maybe two songs it would be completely forgotten. The story is just so incredibly boring by Disney standards.”
†The breakfast club† Even ignoring the numerous “didn’t age well” moments, the pace is atrocious. You’ll have two characters yelling at each other making one cry in one scene, then sneaking away to distinguish the next. It’s stupid.”
“This may piss off some people, but Avengers: Endgame† The movie was really boring until the last fight. The entire time-travel segment was far too long. There was also way too much downtime, which resulted in less stress, unlike Infinite War that kept me busy all the time. Three hours was just way too long.”
“If I have to stay awake for the whole duration of… interstellar to save my life, tell my wife I love her.”
†A quiet place† The monsters had super hearing and would rush you from miles away because your toy makes a noise, but they can’t hear you breathing (or your heart beating) when they’re practically next to you? No government thought of testing some sound frequencies as weapons against a creature that hunts for sound? Your child has survived this terrible apocalypse and will have seen people making noise and being slaughtered, but is he purposefully doing something that is very likely to make noise? Children in war zones quickly learn to hide when violent militias emerge. The characters’ response to this is to have a baby…and the plan is to put it in a box when it cries.”
†Toy Story 4† Wasn’t as good as the others.”
My top five favorite movies of all time include: The Godfather† The Godfather Part II† the deceasedand True love† So obviously I like gangster movies. To answer the question: Scarface† It’s just not that good. It’s decent.”
†The Dark Knight† The film revolves around Ledger’s (amazing) performance. But the rest is a ton of plot armor, boring subplots, and thinly drawn characters like Dent, Dawes, the Mayor, and even Gordon. The ‘choose the right or the satisfying’ set of badly outdated pieces. They are boring on replay. And it all feels like Philosophy 101, like the kind of shit anxious teens would say to each other if they stayed up late at night.”
“I remember every moody teenager in my neighborhood was obsessed with” 300 as if it were the epitome of badassery. I liked it, but I knew guys who watched that movie almost every day. It consumed their existence.”
†Spider-Man: No Way Home was really hyped because all the old characters returned. But the plot is weak and some of the main characters were suddenly the side characters who didn’t add anything to the plot. Also, the stories didn’t add up and there were too many plot holes. It was nice to watch, but in my opinion not as good as claimed.”
†Ready Player One† Anyone who has read the book knows that the movie can’t even be called the same because they basically just took the names from the book and deleted the rest.”
†Basic principle† It tries so damn hard to convince the audience that it’s their fault they can’t keep up with the plot, which really just doesn’t make sense.”
“I often see The usual suspects is discussed in the same frame as films such as fight club and The Sixth Sense, in that the ending of the twist is clever in the way it changes your second look. In those movies, the actions of the other characters are completely reframed and make so much more sense on a rewatch. In The usual suspects, all the revelations are made in the last five minutes, and until then a viewer can’t put together the truth on their own. There are very few seeded clues as to what’s really going on and nothing that would make your jaw drop. It’s still a fun movie, but it’s not nearly as smart and twisty as some people call it.”
“Most of the comedies starring Will Ferrell. They no doubt get a lot of critical acclaim, but my group of friends have loved them over the years. Ferrell is great with more minor roles though.”
“The Star Wars sequel trilogy. The characters are thin and somehow the story is even thinner while trying to be unique.”
†charm† It’s really good, but it’s not great. The third act was very rushed and they more or less took advantage of the plot, as there was no human adversary. It could have been better, but it was a bit of an undershoot, in my opinion.”
†Taxi driver† Watched it for the first time yesterday and thought it was awful. So boring, and the plot was terrible. I’m sorry, I just didn’t understand at all. I thought I was guaranteed to have a great time.”
†Deadpool 2† The movie itself was fine, but it failed to capture the exposure in a bottle as it wasn’t any better than the first. Russell, the lad, was written as very annoying, Cable should have had more screen time, humor was a 7/10 at best and the plot twist was questionable.”
†The Devil Wears Prada is one of the most boring movies I’ve ever seen, and I Like it fashion and Anne Hathaway.”
“Old one, but I still can’t understand the obsession” Fat† Good choreography and that’s it. Cheesy, horrible characters and a stupid storyline. Terrible movie.”
“I have tried several times to Harry Potter† I grew up when they came out and I just couldn’t get into them. I even tried to read the books. Not my jam, I guess.”
†Napoleon Dynamite† I saw it once and for my life couldn’t understand why it’s such a popular movie.”
“Unpopular opinion, but La La Land† The whole premise of the movie was that a stranger bumped into the main character in passing, and she harbors a festering grudge for months, then one day randomly bumps into him expecting him to remember her and apologize and pretend he owes her something . I’ve only turned off a movie twice halfway through, and this was one of the times. I really tried, but the plot was so boring and random I couldn’t finish it.”
†boyhood† If it hadn’t been filmed over such a long period of time, it would have been a crappy movie that wouldn’t get much praise.”
“The Mission Impossible series. How many impossible missions do they have to complete before the movies are mentioned Mission is very possible†
†The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King† It’s at least an hour too long.”
†joker† It’s the most unoriginal, pointless movie I’ve seen. All they did was do it again The king of comedy with hints from Taxi driver† Joaquin’s acting was great, but the movie and the message were so terrible.”
