Speaking to MSN.com in September 2021, Maria then admitted that the couple “has not set a date” due to “so many uncertainties” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“We haven’t really talked about it yet, because we want our friends and family to feel comfortable in an environment and not feel like they have to attend anything,” she explains.

Maria’s life has gone through a number of changes over the past two years, including retiring from tennis in February 2020.

In a statement published to Vanity Fair, the athlete wrote that she was “saying goodbye” to the sport that made her a household name.

‘How do you leave the only life you’ve ever known? How do you walk away from the jobs you’ve been training for since you were a little girl, the game you love – one that brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys – a sport where you found a family, along with fans standing behind you for over 28 years?

“This is new to me, so please forgive me. Tennis – I’m saying goodbye,’ she concluded.
