A man drove his car into a barricade near the Capitol in Washington DC early Sunday and then began firing shots into the air before shooting himself, police said.
The incident happened just before 4 a.m. when the man rammed his car into a vehicle barricade near the Capitol.
As the man got out of the crashed car, it went up in flames, police said.
“At this point, it looks like the man didn’t target members of Congress who are on recess, and it doesn’t look like officers fired their weapons,” Capitol Police said.
Police said the man then fired several shots into the air along East Capitol Street. When police responded and approached, the man shot himself, police said. No one else was injured.
It comes at a time when law enforcement agencies across the country are facing an increasing number of threats and federal officials have warned of the potential of violent attacks on government buildings in the days since former President Donald Trump’s FBI search for Mar-a-Lago. Florida estate.
