The Liverpool squad was “saddened” by Sadio Mane’s decision to leave the club and sign for Bayern Munich, the attacker said.

The 30-year-old, who had just 12 months left on his contract at Anfield, has signed a three-year deal with the Bundesliga champions. He is leaving after six years helping the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

After sealing his transfer, the Senegal international has spoken about how the Liverpool side have reacted to the transfer and explained why he decided to leave the Anfield team. It comes as fellow forward Takumi Minamino also left the club this week, despite manager Jurgen Klopp always judging the former Red Bull Salzburg star.

Selection reacts to Mane .’s departure

Sadio Mane says his former Liverpool team-mates were “sad” after he sent them a message saying goodbye to them.

The Senegal international completed his £35.1 million transfer to Bayern Munich on Wednesday and says he is enjoying his “new challenge”. He also shared how he said goodbye to his Liverpool team-mates while the players currently away are enjoying the summer break.

Mane says he “sent a long text saying goodbye to everyone”, adding that replies show the Liverpool suad has been left “sad” by his departure.

The attacker has sealed his departure from Anfield after it became clear that the Reds would not meet his demands and with just one year left on his contract. But Mane now admits it is “very strange” not to be a Liverpool player anymore.

Klopp comments on Minamino

Takumi Minamino is about to seal his departure from Liverpool, while AS Monaco will sign the attacker.

The Japan international joined the Reds in January 2020 for £8 million from Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg and has had a mixed time at Anfield. After struggling to break into the first team, Minamino was loaned to Southampton just 12 months after his arrival.

At the time, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said he saw “a lot of potential” in the attacker and described him as a “long-term project”. Earlier this year, he also described Minamino as an “outstanding talent”, but after failing to find a place for him in his starting lineup, Klopp has agreed to let the striker leave for more first-team football.
