Three dead and one seriously injured in Maryland mass shooting

Three people were killed and four injured after a shooting at a factory in Smithsburg, Maryland, authorities say.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death toll after violence broke out at Columbia Machine Thursday afternoon.

The male suspect was shot and injured during a confrontation with a Maryland State Police officer, the sheriff’s office said.

The trooper was shot in the shoulder, but returned fire, hitting the gunman who was hospitalized.

“On June 9, 2022, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to Columbia Machine Inc., 12912 Bikle Road, Smithsburg, MD, for reports of an active gunman,” the department said.

“Units responded immediately and found 4 victims, 3 of whom died on the spot and one was seriously injured. The suspect fled before police arrived.

“The description was quickly released to other responding units and the suspicious vehicle was found by Maryland State Police in the Maplesville Road and Mount Aetna Road area, gunshots were exchanged between the suspect and the Trooper. Both were injured and were taken for medical treatment. †

Smithsburg is about 75 miles west of Baltimore.

Victims were all facility employees

The people killed in the mass shooting were all Columbia Machine employees, police said.

The victims have been identified as Mark Alan Fry, 50; Charles Edward Minnick, 31; and Joshua Robert Wallace, 30.

The fourth person seriously injured has been identified as Brandon Chase Michael, 42, Washington County Sheriff Doug Mullendore said.

Locals asked to stay away from the area

Congressman David Trone said on Thursday his office is “actively overseeing” the mass shooting in Smithsburg.

“If you are in the area, please stay away from the area if the police respond,” he said.

Shooting suspect in custody

The suspect in the shooting, a 23-year-old man from West Virginia, has been taken into custody, police said after a video emerged of the gunman and troopers exchanging fire.

The sheriff’s office said they will not name the suspect until he is officially charged.

David Creamer, 69, is a member of the Smithburg Volunteer Fire Department and has lived in the city since 1988. He saw warnings about the shooting go out shortly before 3 p.m

Creamer said the last fatal shooting he can remember in Smithsburg was about a decade ago, he told the Associated Press.

“This stuff doesn’t happen here,” Creamer said. “Everyone knows everyone well. It’s a family atmosphere. We look out for each other.”
