The wasteland has become even more beautiful and charming: Variety say that Kyle MacLachlan, who is still best known for Twin Peaks but who has done many other good things has joined the cast of Amazon Prime Videos’ precipitation tv show† We don’t know anything about who he plays, as is standard for any announcement about this show’s cast, but we could see him playing a frustratingly sympathetic bureaucrat who stumbles into a position of power after the apocalypse… kind of like his mayoral character. Portlandia but with Super Mutants and Power Armor.

precipitationwhich is based on the video game franchise now owned by Bethesda Softworks (the Skyrim people), now owned by Microsoft (the Space Cadet pinball machine people), comes from showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan (the west world people). Like the games, we contract it will take place in a retro 50s-style future ravaged by nuclear war, with a particular focus on “Vaults” – huge underground survival bunkers typically based on some sort of cruel, experimental theme (such as “the door closes not really” or “everyone gets frozen” or “drugs are pumped into the air supply”).

MacLachlan joins the previously released cast Ella Purnell and Walton Gogginswith other newcomers, including Xelia Mendes-Jones (of The wheel of time) and Aaron Moten (of Apple’s upcoming Emancipation† We don’t know who plays any of them, of course, but it’s worth noting that there aren’t really any major characters in the precipitation universe that people should see in an adaptation… these are open ended role-playing games that are more about a particular taste of satire and making your own story in their crazy world. Tone and aesthetics are more important than a specific plot in this case, so maybe that’s why Nolan and Joy are keeping things close. (Or maybe the intense secrecy surrounding west world broke them.)
