Almost a year later Jason Derulo and Jena Frumes broke off their relationship, she has opened up about their history.
“I wouldn’t call myself a whore,” 28-year-old Frumes wrote via Instagram on Thursday, June 30. “It’s a shame my situation didn’t work out because we once had the ambition to get married, but maybe it’s best to be single than to be in a relationship and to be constantly disrespected, cheated and lied to. Or is it better to stay and be quiet so that people like you? … to approve?”
The social media influencer, who was first associated with the 32-year-old singer in March 2020, doubled her stance in a second statement.
“Women really don’t deserve to be treated and judged as they are. Nobody aspires to be a single mother,” she explained on Instagram Story on Thursday. “It is the greatest heartbreak and the greatest failure for me personally, knowing that I am alone in this. But if your non-negotiables are put to the test, you will never find peace in that relationship.”
She added: “If the streets come first I can’t change that, so stop blaming the women as if we chose the life of a single mother. That’s hella annoying. You don’t know what women go through to try and ‘make it work’. It was never about money or dating someone famous.”
While Derulo has not yet publicly addressed his former partner’s claims, she claimed she was “in love” and that they planned to father their 13-month-old son, Jason King, before his birth in May 2021.
“It didn’t work out and life has to go on. Leave me alone,” she concluded in her social media statement.
The ‘Talk Dirty’ artist confirmed that the pair split in September 2021, nearly four months after their first child was born.
“Jena and I have decided to separate,” Derulo wrote in a now-deleted Twitter statement at the time. “She’s a great mom, but we feel that if we’re apart right now, we can be the best version of ourselves and the best parents we could be. Please respect our privacy [at] this time.”
Although Derulo and the model have continued to co-parent their son, they weren’t interested in showing his face on social media so soon after his birth.
“I’ve been very private this whole trip, which has brought me so much peace,” Frumes wrote in May 2021 via Instagram Story. “It is MY choice not to show my baby’s face online. Many of you feel too entitled to express opinions that NOBODY asked for. My baby is beautiful and 100 percent healthy, but right now my baby is all new to the world. I refuse to let the negative energy of social media mess with my family’s energy. … Until then, keep all this perfection to ourselves to enjoy.”
The now-exes have since shared little Jason’s face in several social media updates.
Derulo did not immediately respond to Us Weekly‘s request for comment.
