APOLLO, A SOLO EXHIBITION BY JEFF KOONS AT DESTE FOUNDATION
Founded in Geneva in 1983 by collector Dakis Joannou, the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art is known for participating in an extensive exhibition program promoting both emerging and established artists. Since 2009, the foundation has exhibited the world’s most recognized names in contemporary art, including Matthew Barney, Kiki Smith and Maurizio Cattelan, in its slaughterhouse converted into an art space on the Greek island of Hydra.
After the postponement of recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DESTE . Foundation presents Jeff Koons long awaited project Apollo. The solo exhibition can be seen from June 21 to October 31, 2022 in DESTE’s Project Space in the old slaughterhouse in Hydra.

A TEMPLE TO ENTER A METAPHYSICAL DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE CONTEMPORARY AND THE ANCIENT
Jeff Koons: Apollo at Desde Foundation presents new sculptures by the artist along with ready-made objects selected by the artist to engage the viewer in a metaphysical dialogue between the contemporary and the ancient. The show also marks more than twenty years since Jeff Koons’ last solo exhibition in Greece.
Before entering, visitors are welcomed by a hulking 9.1-meter (30-foot) wide reflective wind spinner set up above the slaughterhouse. dubbed Apollo wind spinner, the gold carving depicts the face of Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry, art, prophecy, truth, archery, plague, healing, sun and light.
Once inside, in the middle of the installation is Apollo Kithara, a polychrome animatronic statue over 2.3 meters high. Apollo plays a kithara, which is considered to be the origin of today’s guitar. Surrounding the statue are ancient frescoes from Boscoreale, near Pompeii, transforming the walls of the slaughterhouse.
In Apollo, Jeff Koons has created a new temple, where art lovers are invited on a pilgrimage. The exhibition activates the senses through music, sage burning and baked offerings reminiscent of antiquity. With the sounds of the ancient kithara juxtaposed with contemporary songs, the two musical formats are at times incoherent and at other times sublime beauty. The overall exhibit is metaphysical and celebrates human history and ambition.
