Jack HarlowIs at the top of his game and at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart thanks to his new single “First Class” — but some fans, critics and industry executives are questioning whether racing plays a part in his success.
Of course, Jack’s hit samples Fergie2006’s ‘Glamorous’, the 2006 multi-platinum track, and we all know it absolutely exploded on TikTok, which certainly helped it take the top spot.
Still, Top Dawg Entertainment President Terrence “Punch” Henderson sparked a debate on Twitter on Tuesday by proclaiming that black performers should be more exceptional compared to their white counterparts.
While “Punch” never mentions Jack by name, the twitterverse got his point.
He also seemed to refer to Macklemore and Ryan LewisBeating “The Heist” album Kendrick Lamar‘good kid, mAAd city’ at the 2014 Grammys as an example.
The debate was featured in Tuesday’s episode of TMZ Hip Hop … Like ours DJ Hed and Rodney Rikaic challenged each other on what really fuels the Kentucky-born rapper’s rise to the top.
Great convo, and you have to watch the clip, because they actually answered this hypothetical answer: IF Jack were a black rapper, whose career would he most resemble???
Dave East and sweetie Attention lovers!
All in all, Jack is experiencing a renaissance year within a still thriving career. His new album “Come Home the Kids Miss You” will be released on May 6, he plays in the †White Men Can’t Jump” reboot …and he’s just coming off a KFC campaign that benefits various social justice and youth groups.
Worthy of a first-class seat in today’s hip-hop? The charts say yes.
