IU Talks About Attending Cannes Film Festival And Working With Song Kang Ho In “Broker”

IU recently took part in an interview to talk about her movie “Broker” and her experience attending the 75th Cannes Film Festival!

“Broker”, which hit theaters on June 8 after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month, is the first-ever Korean film ever made by Japanese star director Koreeda Hirokazu. The film tells the story of playpens, set up for people who are no longer able to care for their babies, to give them anonymously. Song Kang Ho and Kang Dong Won star as the self-proclaimed well-meaning “real estate agent” partners Sang Hyun and Dong Soo. IU plays So Young, a new mother who eventually joins the real estate agents’ journey. Bae Doona and Lee Joo Young play Detective Soo Jin and Detective Lee who are chasing the real estate agents.

Noting that I was out of touch with reality during the Cannes Film Festival, IU said: “My schedule there was so packed that I didn’t know if I was in Cannes or elsewhere. It still feels that way.”

Her co-star Song Kang Ho made history at the landmark film festival when he won Best Actor for his role in “Broker,” making him the first Korean man ever to do so. IU commented: “It was so amazing to watch Song Kang Ho win the Best Actor award. It gave me goosebumps right away.” She also said it felt like a scene from a movie as he took the stage to give his acceptance speech, adding: “After receiving the award, Song Kang Ho said, ‘I’m grateful to everyone.’ I was so grateful that he called me.”

IU received many positive reviews for her acting in the film, to the point where some even questioned whether she would receive the Best Actress award. IU humbly replied, “I’m glad people think so well of me, but I don’t have any lingering feelings about not receiving an award.”

She continued: “After the movie premiered and I heard people say a lot of good things about my acting, I didn’t believe it at first. I thought they would only tell me the good parts, but I realized after sending the comments through a translator. It was new to me that there were people who were impressed with my acting. I wondered if it was because of the director. I felt really great.”

About working with Song Kang Ho, IU said, “He was almost always the first to arrive on set. I loved just being on set, and I was concerned whether or not I was right for this environment. I thought to myself, ‘I just have to do it right.’”

IU said the hardest scene in the film was the opening scene where she had to leave the baby in the church’s playpen in the middle of the rain. “From the first scene, we rained all night,” she recalls. “It was really cold and it took a physical toll. But when I saw the film, I thought it turned out really well and I was satisfied. Everyone has been through a lot.”

To prepare for her role, IU had to practice her curse skills. She revealed, “I practiced swearing in front of my parents because they were the most objective. I remember asking them to tell me if it sounded awkward.”

IU also talked about how she decided to participate in the film. “I really wanted to work with director Koreeda Hirokazu,” she explains. “I was also in touch with Bae Doona. She was cast for me so I asked her about it and she thought it would be a great idea, so that confirmed my determination.”

IU wrapped her experience in the film when she said, “There were a lot of scenarios that I personally hadn’t experienced, so there were some issues. I was wondering if I could implicitly portray the people who went through something like this. I think that everyone has self-compassion, but So Young has no room for such luxury in her life, so that part was really sad.”

As for her plans for the future, IU noted, “I think I’m someone who was born to work. Someone who has to keep working.”
