DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – At least three people were killed on Saturday morning in an earthquake in southern Iran, state television reported.
“Unfortunately, three people have been killed and eight injured so far,” Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, the head of disaster relief for Hormozgan province on Iran’s Persian Gulf coast, said in the report.
Iranian media said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1, while the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center estimated it at 6.0. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, or just over six miles, the European monitoring group said. Quakes were felt in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
Major geological fault lines crisscross Iran, which has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.
