Idris Elba’s daughter failed to land the role of the beast due to poor chemistry

Idris Elba stars in “Beast” as a father who tries to protect his two daughters from a ferocious lion in a South African wildlife sanctuary. It turns out that Elba’s 20-year-old daughter auditioned to play one of his character’s daughters in the film, but she failed to land the part because her chemistry with her father “didn’t match.” According to Elba, she stopped talking to him for three weeks after she lost the part.

“She wants to be an actress and she auditioned,” Elba told “The Breakfast Club” (via Insider). “And you know, it came down to chemistry in the end. You know, my daughter, she was great, but the relationship in the movie and the relationship with my daughter was — the chemistry was strangely not right for film. My daughter hasn’t spoken to me for about three weeks.”

“Beast” producer Will Packer said Elba’s daughter was “very good” at the audition and “very close” to landing the role in the film, but added, “Idris is right, some nuances of that real relationship sometimes doesn’t translate on screen.” Packer insisted that Elba’s daughter was “very friendly” because she didn’t get the part, and later attended the premiere of “Beast” with her father.

“I’m really proud of her for going through that, you know what I mean,” Elba said. “And then not get the part, but still come to the premiere.”

Relative newcomers Iyana Halley and Leah Sava Jeffries play Elba’s daughters in “Beast,” and they recently defended their roles in the film during an interview with Variety.

“We’re both brown-skinned and dark-skinned girls and we’re directing a movie, and it’s nothing that’s humiliating,” Halley said.

“I want to see more black girls get parts that aren’t just sassy [friend] or live nearby,” added Jeffries, who also has a starring role in Disney+’s upcoming “Percy Jackson” series. “I want to see them smart and number one.”

“Beast” is now playing in theaters across the country.
