CALGARY — The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hockey Canada is stepping down from his position with immediate effect.

Hockey Canada says Michael Brind’Amour informed the board of his decision Friday night, as the organization is under intense scrutiny for its handling of sexual assault allegations and its culture of silence.

Brind’Amour released a statement saying he has “listened carefully and attentively to Canadians’ comments” and believes that “immediate action is essential to address the important challenges facing (the) organization and (the) sport. (hockey) face.”

Brind’Amour was first elected chairman in 2018 and his last term is expected to end in November.

Hockey Canada says the board of directors will meet in the coming days to determine next steps and appoint an interim chairman.

The next board election is scheduled for the annual meeting in November 2022.
