Guinness World Record holder for longest job at the same company is Walter Orthmann: NPR

Walter Orthmann started working as a teenager at a textile company in Brazil. Turning 100 this month, he has broken the Guinness World Record for longest career with the same company.

According to the Guinness World Records, Orthmann has been working at what is now known as ReneauxView for 84 years and nine days, as verified in January. In those eight decades, he has collected wages in nine different currencies.

Orthmann was born in Santa Catarina, Brazil — an area with a large German population — on April 19, 1922, according to Guinness. As a teenager, his family suffered financially and he applied for a job at a weaving mill. Thanks to his command of German, the young Orthmann got a job there as a naval assistant.

Shortly after, he was promoted to a sales position before becoming a sales manager.

“I got the chance to work as a salesman,” he said in a release. “I traveled to São Paulo and in less than a week I filled production with orders equivalent to three months of work.”

In the 1950s, he began traveling around the country and establishing relationships with clients who became his friends.

For Orthmann, having a job means a sense of “purpose, dedication and routine,” according to the release.

“I don’t plan much, nor do I care much about tomorrow,” Orthmann said. “All I care about is that tomorrow will be another day when I wake up, get up, exercise and go to work.”

Orthmann celebrated his centenary with colleagues earlier this month and says the office is his favorite place. This world record, he says, is his proudest achievement.

“You should be concerned with the present, not the past or the future,” he says. “Here and now is what counts. So let’s get to work!”
