Great British Sewing Bee outrage over Derbyshire teacher

Viewers of BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee were shocked after last night’s episode when the jury decided to save Derbyshire teacher Brogan. The announcement means all four semifinalists will advance to next week’s grand final.

Despite Brogan becoming emotional when she found out she would be in this year’s finals, many fans found the decision “suspicious” and were furious that the show “changed the rules” when it suited him.

Although all four contestants feared they could be the next to leave the show. Brogan and fellow contestant Man Yee appeared to be most at risk. Annie, Brogan, Debra and Man Yee were asked by the judges to create Japanese-inspired outfits for this week’s challenge.

Judge Esme Young told the contestants she wished they could come up with a kimono-style dress in this week’s pattern challenge. Brogan received some criticism from the judges for her design. However, Judge Patrick Grant noted that the garment was not a “bad try”.

Meanwhile, Debra was told she needed more contrast in her garment, while Man Yee received high praise from the two judges during the show that aired on Wednesday, June 22.

Annie’s was called “beautifully sewn” by Patrick, who noted, “The shape of your sleeves is beautiful.”

He continued, “I can’t recommend it enough.” Annie won the challenge, while Debra finished last.

In the transformation challenge, the four old denim items had to “beautify” using a Japanese technique called sashiko. The technique uses visible stitching to decorate and rejuvenate old clothes, the Express reports.

Brogan was called “the most competent sewer” by Patrick and went into the final round. However, the judges said both she and Debra were in a precarious position.

The custom challenge saw the sewers come up with origami-inspired creations. Fans noted online that Brogan may be in trouble because her design seemingly fell short of the mark.

After a difficult final round, it was time for the judges to announce who would leave. Annie won Garment of the Week with her pink origami dress, but this meant bad news was to follow.

This year’s LR finalists: Man Yee, Brogan, Annie and Debra

Host Sara Pascoe commented, “I hate this bit. The judges have said it’s never been this hard.

“It’s such a tough, tough decision, but the person going home is… Nobody!” As the women gasped, Sara announced in tears, “You’re all in the finals!”

Patrick explained to viewers that they couldn’t choose between Brogan and Man Yee, so he made a surprising decision not to pick anyone to leave.

But not everyone was happy with the shock announcement. Twitter user @EilidhNash commented: “What the actual @sewingbee decision is has been clear to viewers for weeks and when it was the only one available, you change the rules!!! #SewingBee.”

@leleloves72 wrote: “I can smell cronyism with Brogen because how did she stay? #SewingBee.”

JaneRoberts added: “Really… #SewingBee ..definitely the origami dress should have left.. Brogan bias…”

@simonmunday65 furious: “Very suspicious, why didn’t Brogan go? Clearly the worst of the week.

“Never trusted the BBC since they messed with the result of naming the Blue Peter cat. #SewingBee.”

However, other fans of the show were happy to see all four women made it to the final.

@qlcie shared: “omg so relieved they all made it to the final, it would have been sad to see anyone go home #SewingBee.”

“#sewingbee good decision,” added @SusieVereker. (sic)
