Gorillaz announce new single ‘Cracker Island’

Gorillaz has warned fans about an upcoming new single, “Cracker Island,” which has taken to social media to make the announcement.

The experimental animated outfit — featuring Blur legend Damon Albarn — shared the news today (June 8) and posted a short clip featuring each cartoon “member” of Gorillaz — 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel — alongside the caption, “Cracker Island is coming…” and the hashtag #thelastcult.

Later they posted two images – one of 2D and one of the group together – with the caption: “2D is the choice!”

Although it is not yet known when ‘Cracker Island’ will be released, you will find a pre-save link for the single here. The song has been performed live during Gorillaz’ current world tour, most notably featuring guest vocals from Thundercat. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether he will appear on the studio mix.

The upcoming release of ‘Cracker Island’ marks Gorillaz’s first new music since last year’s ‘Meanwhile’ EP. The three-track offering led the group to enlist Jelani Blackman, AJ Tracey and Alicai Harley for guest spots.

In a four-star review of the EP – a sonic tribute to London’s famous Notting Hill Carnival, canceled ahead of the release of ‘Meanwhile’ – NMEs Kyann-Sian Williams wrote that the release is “the perfect soundtrack to get you in the mood before wrecking a dance floor”.

Gorillaz’s last studio album was “Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez” from 2020. It was called “a worthwhile undertaking” in a four-star review by NME‘s Thomas Smith.

During Gorillaz’s world tour, they will headline shows in Australia, where they will also co-headline Splendor In The Grass alongside Tyler, The Creator and The Strokes.

Last month they extended the tour with a North American leg, which kicks off in September with EARTHGANG and Jungle in tow. The band will also return to the UK in August, with a headline show at the All Points East festival.
