Fatal collision after failed armed robbery

A man reportedly on the run from a botched armed robbery has died after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle in Wonga Park.

The man was traveling with another person in a blue Ford Falcon when he collided with a white Nissan Patrol on Homestead Road at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the car was previously seen leaving the scene of an attempted armed robbery of a nearby business.

Witnesses said two men demanded cigarettes and money from the owner of Wonga Park Cellars on Yarra Road at 3:10 p.m., with one of them wielding a hammer.

Shane Rees, owner of the post office next door to the store and the bottle shop, said he heard the store owner’s cry for help and confronted one of the men before they fled.

“It’s quite confronting to see someone waving a hammer and you don’t know what they’re thinking,” he said.

“I’m a big guy and he was a bit smaller and thinner, so I think he felt intimidated. I asked him to leave and put the hammer down.”

Police said no injuries were reported and nothing was taken.
