Evidence that Trump is responsible for January 6 ‘very powerful’

Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) said on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday that the evidence that former President Trump is responsible for the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot was “very strong.”

Schiff said: “The evidence is very strong that Donald Trump started telling this big lie, even before the election, that he said that all votes counted after Election Day would be inherently suspicious. That lie continued after the election and eventually led to this crowd gathering and attacking the Capitol. I think you’ve only heard a few examples of what those witnesses said behind closed doors. There are many more testimonies where that came from.”

Anchor Martha Raddatz said, “Let me ask you, is there a real conversation between people in Trump’s orbit and Proud Boys, Oathkeepers?”

Schiff said, “Well, you know, as I think the committee has already disclosed and reported publicly, there are, of course, connections between these white nationalist groups and some in Trump’s orbit. Again, I don’t want to go into the details of the evidence. You’ll just have to wait until we get to that point of our hearings. But I think what’s important again, is the broad context of all this, the knowledge prior to Jan. 6 that there would be violent white nationalist groups gathering together with others in that mall. And yet the president’s decision to incite that mob and do nothing while that attack was taking place. That dereliction of duty, I think, as powerful as the president’s actions, is his passivity on that day.”
