De Jong to Manchester United more important than Nunez . to miss

A mixed 24 hours for Manchester United could indicate that the club is missing out on a transfer target and moving closer to signing another.

The opportunity to sign Darwin Nunez seems to be slipping from United’s hands. The Athletic report says rivals Liverpool are moving forward “and there is growing belief that a deal will come.”

Meanwhile, Frenkie de Jong’s transfer to Manchester United is drawing closer, with Marca reporting the Red Devils’ first offer of £51million plus £17million in add-ons has been submitted, and Barcelona are considering the offer ‘seriously’.

The news from De Jong is a positive step, as United approach the club’s first purchase of the summer.

More important than Nunez . to miss

De Jong will cost Manchester United a total of £68 million. The club cannot then go out and spend 80 million pounds on Darwin Nunez. It’s not summer for that.

United had to make a choice, which is more important, a midfielder or a striker, and cut accordingly.

While it’s always great to spend £80m on a striker, this is the kind of move you make when you put the icing on the cake of your project, like Liverpool, or from a strong position.

This is not the kind of move you make when trying to build a project from scratch.

Nunez offers no guarantees despite his stunning success rate last season. He has never played in a European top five. For a well-developed team like Liverpool he should do just fine, but for a disjointed Manchester United he may not have been the cornerstone of the project we needed.

Frenkie de Jong fills a position that Manchester United desperately needs. The Red Devils’ midfield lacks depth and quality, and the Dutchman will change the way we play for the better.

There will be no more possession-shy performances in midfield, with players afraid to grab and hold the ball. De Jong is a master of his craft and proven in Erik ten Hag’s system.

He already has a steady relationship with Donny van de Beek, which can help him revive his fortune, and together the pair can help establish Ten Hag’s way of playing.

De Jong may not be the only midfielder to sign United, the club certainly needs two, but he will be the most important asset.

There’s no point in signing Darwin Nunez when there’s a bare, underpowered midfield behind him. United can sign another striker or attacking player who can support Cristiano Ronaldo for much cheaper.

Adding De Jong is a crucial part of United’s rebuilding and more important than missing Nunez. Now it is crucial that Erik ten Hag works out his charm and gets the deal over for the Dutchman.
