A popular Washington DC gym has apologized after a bar in one of their pool clubs served a Juneteenth-themed drink.

The drink, which some on social media say was served at the VIDA Fitness Penthouse Pool Club in Washington, DC, was called a “Watermelon Henny Lemonade” and reportedly contained Hennessy, watermelon liqueur and lemonade.

In an email sent to members of the Penthouse Pool Club on July 1, Aaron Moore, VIDA Fitness’ director of operations, said the drink was “inappropriate, insensitive and should not have happened under our control.”

“On behalf of the senior team here at Penthouse Pool Club and VIDA Fitness, I would like to apologize for Juneteenth’s celebratory cocktail. It was inappropriate, insensitive and should not have happened under our supervision. I felt immense regret and pain when I realized we had abandoned the VIDA family and our greater community,” Moore wrote.

Moore said the company has committed “significant resources” over the past two years to ensure a “mistake like this didn’t happen.”

“However, after an internal review, we found that we were not following our own processes and not meeting our standards,” Moore wrote at the time.

To avoid another instance like this, Moore said the company has begun “retraining our team on the proper submission process for cultural heritage celebrations so that offensive ideas like the Juneteenth cocktail are no longer around.”

The company also offers “more advanced training” that aims to “integrate the sensitivities and greater awareness of DEI into our daily lives”.

“We want you to know that we made this mistake and offer our sincere apologies to our members, staff and guests,” said Moore.
