Brazil topped Group G with a game to spare, after beating Serbia 2-0 and Switzerland 1-0. A much changed team were beaten 1-0 by Cameroon in their final group game, their first defeat against an African team. They then defeated South Korea 4–1 in the Round of 16, with Brazil’s goals coming in the first half.

Croatia and Brazil have played each other four times, with Brazil winning three times and drawing the other time. Two of those matches took place at the World Cup. The first was a 1–0 win over Brazil in the group stage of the 2006 tournament. The teams then met in the opening match of the 2014 World Cup, with Neymar scoring two of the goals in a 3–1 win. Their most recent encounter was a friendly in 2018, which ended 2-0 against Brazil.
