Today, Saturday, there were conflicting reports about the situation in the strategic city of Lysichansk in eastern Ukraine.
Today, Saturday, Ukraine clarified the situation around the city in response to confirmation from separatist fighters.
The Ukrainian army said the city was “not under siege”, contradicting claims by separatist fighters.
“Heavy fighting is taking place near Lyschansk. Fortunately, the city is not under siege and is under the control of the Ukrainian army,” said a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Guard, Ruslan Mozychuk.
This statement contradicts what was previously announced by a representative of the separatist forces in Lugansk. A representative of the separatist forces was quoted by the Russian news agency TASS as saying that “Lisechansk is under siege completely”.
The city has witnessed violent battles for days.
Lysichansk is strategically important as it is the last major city in Luhansk, one of the two industrial districts of Donbass, which is still under Ukrainian control.
