Message from Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto, artistic director of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra:

A doctor friend told me a few years ago that musicians and actors seem to be the last to call in sick. He wasn’t sure if it’s due to dedication, fear of economic hardship—or perhaps some form of a savior complex in which the patient assumes that the co-workers, the concert, or even the entire art form will collapse if he or she stops participating for a while. while.

It’s probably all of the above, in different mixtures for different people, and a bunch of other impulses too.

That said, I’ve been calling in sick for the rest of this year.

It means letting go of several engagements that I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. Slandering co-workers and executives who counted on my showing up is no fun at all.

In my situation, however, the option to take time off was the only one that made sense. I will use the next few weeks to zoom out, admire the landscape and find my way back. I still consider my profession a huge gift, and I look forward to getting back to it in January, hopefully with a little more perspective.

Lots of love from Southern Finland, where the first snow of this winter fell yesterday.
