Animals Enjoy Patriotic Treats Before July 4th at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo

Animals at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo received an array of patriotic treats to kick off the Independence Day festivities. In a press release, the zoo said that animal care specialists have created “red, white and blue enrichment candies for different animals.” The bottlenose dolphins were given a floating flag made from sugar-free gelatin, while some California sea lions and gray seals at the zoo enjoyed “Happy 4th of July” cakes made from ice cream and sugar-free gelatin. Even the zoo’s two 27-year-old brown bears joined in the festivities with red, white and blue ice cubes filled with carrots, sweet potatoes, bones, apples and blueberries. The zoo will host patriotic-themed shows throughout the weekend, it said. Credit: Lynette Kleisner/CNS-Brookfield Zoo via Storyful
