The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the use of force by CPS officers involved in the shooting that occurred in a parkade in the northwestern community of Varsity. ASIRT issued a release Friday saying CPS officers responded to calls from a man wielding a sword in the parkade at Varsity Estates Circle NW around 11:49 p.m. The officers found the man on arrival, still with a sword in his hand.

“The man then went to a mechanical room and barricaded himself inside. Police officers spoke to the man and after some time set up a pepper spray nebulizer in the tech room,” the ASIRT release said.
The man eventually left the room with the sword in hand and a confrontation ensued. Several officers fired less-lethal baton throws at the man as an officer fired his service weapon, hitting the man before he fell to the ground.
