STAY WITH THE ART STARS
About once a decade, the execs come into the Hollywood Hills decides it’s time to take a piece of the emerging artists’ pie by gamifying their unceasingly entertaining market in a reality TV show. In 2005 it was “ArtStar†” in which Jeffrey Deitch pitted eight young artists against each other to compete for a solo exhibition at his gallery, with an impressive roster of established artists to accompany them, including Jeff Koons† Kehinde Wiley† Lee Quinonesand Alan Vegas from the band Suicide† Then, in 2011, it was †Artwork: The Next Great Artist†who ran for two seasons and saw Jerry Saltz† Chinese Chowand Simon of Pury judge a series of artists battling it out for a show in the Brooklyn Museum†
That model is being recreated, because the Hirshorn Museum and sculpture garden in Washington, DC, is the latest institution to dangle a solo exhibition in the face of an emerging talent. The casting call is for emerging artists, but Wet paint got the lowdown on who exactly was approached for the show. Designer and sculptor Misha Khan will apparently participate, while Chloe Wise† Peter Zohore† and Jamie Juliano Villanic were asked to join and declined. But they’ve all put some serious thought into it (I imagine they’re all giving a juicy reality TV-esque sound bite).
“I’ve been through many auditions with it,” Wise told me. “That sounds good.”
Juliano-Villani even came up with a concept to appear on the show, which involved wearing so many unlicensed company logos, such as a pepsi sticker on her forehead that her whole person would be blurry if shown on camera.
Kate Gibbswho works in the museum’s communications, told Wet paint that we can expect something more similar to the Great British Bake Off than the typical, hyper-competitive game show setup. Initial filming has been completed, but Gibbs was unable to reveal cast member names or a release date. But she did say it will be made available through CBS/Viacom on the Smithsonian Institute Channeland will be similar to “Artstar” in that established artists will act as mentors.
While these shows have not had long runs historically, there have been successes. Rumor has it that ArtStar is where the Bruce High Quality Foundation formed, and the co-participant of the group, Abigail DeVille† has since shown with Hauser & Wirth†
Nicole nadeau, an artist who took part in “Work of Art,” described the experience as “the strangest art residence in the world.” While it didn’t really advance her career, she said, it was “a cool experiment I did.”
BASEL’S HOTTEST NEW CLUB IS AN OLD VILLA BEING PASSED
The Three kings better hold on to his hat, as a new art guard watering hole has raised its head just in time for the jet set to land in the Alps† Following the model of the art club and Zero Bondthe Basel Social Club is the hottest new mixed-use art space on the map, open only from June 13th to 19th for the duration of Art Basel in Switzerland.
In a villa built in the 1930s called the Beverly Holzmembers of the club can enjoy art from 50 local artists, food by a local Chinese restaurant pengand cocktails by small Swiss gin distillery Gentleman’s Gin described as “mysterious, but very elegant” by a local ghost blog. Basel is a notoriously expensive city to visit, so I was quite surprised to find that a day ticket to the club costs just CHF 15 for a day and CHF 30 for a week, which is roughly the same amount in US dollars.
It really makes sense to open a less expensive meeting place for the fair. Basel in Miami has Mac’s Club Deuceafter all, and sometimes drinking a $30 glass of wine just isn’t real to feel as relaxing as a $3 Budweiser†
“We believe that Basel Social Club provides a playful and inspiring venue for visitors and locals alike who are looking for a less formal, less standardized environment to socialize, meet friends and clients, look at art and enjoy live performances,” said art dealer. Jean-Claude Freymond-Guthwho founded the club together with business partner Robbie Fitzpatrick†
Art will be distributed throughout the villa and pool house. Among the participating artists are Lisa Alvarado† Jeremy Deller† Jill Mulleady† Meret Oppenheim† Soil Thorntonand Mie Yim†
The founders told Wet Paint that the Beverly Holz will be demolished within the year, so if you’re there, this is probably your only chance to check it out. if you go please do report back.

WET PAINT QUESTIONNAIRE
Okay, fair enough. It was quite cruel to ask you the name of the worst dancer, but I’m glad I have information about who’s the best.
Laurie Barrona gallery employee at the Artist room, said Tate assistant curator Fiontan Moran “must be one of the best dancers in the art world.” Meanwhile, artist Khoi Nguyen called Simphiwe Ndzubeand I personally witnessed Ndzube break it down on a Gavin Brown event.
Since no one has nominated a worst dancer, I will fall on my sword and admit that I am terrible.
